Samsung Series 7 Slate to be upgradeable to Windows 8

Samsung debuted a new tablet today called the Series 7 Slate. But this wasn’t another Android tablet, instead, oddly it ran Windows 7 with the company confirming plans to make the device upgradeable to Windows 8. Some early hands-on impressions of the device say that it may be the best Windows 7 tablet ever made. [...]

Samsung GT-i9220 confirmed as smartphone with dual-band WiFi, specs remain in rumorville

Samsung's GT-i9220 has been swirling through the rumor mills for a while now, and we've seen tons of conflicting reports regarding this little monster. While its specifications remain shaky at best, a few solid tidbits courtesy of the Wi-Fi Alliance indeed reveal the GT-i9220 as a smartphone, which counters previous speculation that it was merely a media player. Additionally, this Sammy will feature dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi, the latter being an uncommon (though entirely welcome) feature for smartphones, and lending credence to its high-end specs. As for those details, the most plausible rumors suggest we'll see a dual-core 1.4GHz CPU, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display at 720p along with an 8 megapixel camera. Obviously, internals like these are fightin' words in the smartphone domain, so we're forced to take them with a grain of salt until something more solid crawls out of the woodwork.

Eyes on the T-Mobile Galaxy S II (updated with eyes-on video)

T-Mobile Galaxy S II

There's always one kid who comes to class unprepared, and tonight it's T-Mobile. While AT&T and Sprint let us get our grubby hands all over their merchandise, T-Mobile kept their variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II under wraps (a glass cube, to be specific). Why, you ask? Well we did ask, and it appears that big T hasn't officially released full specs, a release date, or even a name for the device. No knock against T-Mobile, really, as we're firm believers in better late than never, especially when it means putting some final touches on an already stunning device.

And you can put money on it being in the same vein as all the other Galaxy S II devices -- with a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, TouchWiz, and all that jazz. One more pic to whet your appetite is after the break.

The Great Big Camera is very big, pretty great

Darren Samuelson made a really large camera -- some might even go so far as to say he made a "great big camera." The thing weighs 70 pounds and takes a lot of maneuvering and math to operate everything from the lens to the old timey accordion-style bellows. In spite of such difficulties, however, Samuelson embarked on a tour of the US with the monstrous rig in tow, shooting this country from coast to coast in black and white. After the break, check out video of the camera in action at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. You can also see some of his progress and photos in the source link below.

LG Display cuts spending targets for 2012, amid sagging LCD demand

LG Display has decided to drastically cut its expenditure target for 2012, in yet another sign that the LCD market is going through some tough times. Today, the manufacturer announced that it will spend only three trillion won (about $2.8 billion) on its production facilities next year -- a 33 percent decrease from its previously revised budget and LG Display's lowest expenditure target since 2009. The company also said that it has no plans to build a new LCD plants in 2012, suggesting that it may already be facing excess panel supply. Analysts are predicting that demand will remain subdued throughout the end of 2011, though LG Display CFO James Jeong had previously said he expects things to pick up by the beginning of next year.

Toshiba rumored to be announcing ultra-thin tablet at IFA after chunky Thrive did anything but

With a tablet market dominated by the svelte iPad 2, a device with a "chunky design" isn't bound to Thrive. According to Notebook Italia, Toshiba's expected to announce a new ultra-thin tablet at IFA this week, swapping full-size USB and HDMI ports for micro-USB, micro HDMI, and microSD slots in order to shave off a few millimeters from last year's model, leaving the new device with a sleeker, much more appealing design. The rumored slate is expected to ship with a TI OMAP4460 dual-core 1.5GHz processor, an edge-to-edge screen, and a brushed-metal housing. Other specs, including Android version and screen size are a bit thin at this point, but we should have only a few more days to wait before Toshiba's new tab makes its glorious IFA debut in Berlin.

Samsung pushes Galaxy S II launch event back a day due to Hurricane Irene

It looks like you'll have to wait an extra day to learn what you already know: the Galaxy S II -- aka, the Attain, Hercules and Epic 4G Touch -- is about to launch on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. Samsung's pushed Monday's New York press event back a day due to that little east coast storm you may have read something about. Fortunately, these handsets haven't exactly kept a low profile, so we weren't expecting too many surprises anyway. We'll be there covering it live, but in the meantime, stay safe and if you're a Verizon customer, you might want to find a dry place to continue your seething.

Google TV coming to the UK within six months

Google TV
Hey! Britain! Guess what? You're getting Google TV! Try to temper your excitement, we know this is a big day for you, but there's still a bit of a wait ahead. According to the Telegraph and the Daily Mail, Google is aiming to deliver its set-top software to the UK sometime in the next six months. Eric Schmidt is expected to announce the plans at the Edinburgh Television Festival (which starts today), likely including integration of BBC's iPlayer and ITV's Player. Sadly we don't have any more details yet regarding a specific launch date or hardware, but we wouldn't be shocked if it's timed to coincide with the release of the Honeycomb version of Google TV.

Sonic CD headed to Android for the holidays

Veteran games publisher SEGA has proven time and again that it's not afraid of dusting off an old classic for a re-release on modern systems. The latest to join that list is Sonic CD, with the recent news that SEGA will port the game on Android, iOS and other platforms in time for the holiday season.

Sonic CD was originally released on the SEGA CD back in 1993, but has traditionally been left out of SEGA compilations up until now. The game sees the company's spiky mascot travelling through time to correct the evil meddlings of Dr Eggman, saving all manner of furry critters along the way.

Also, SEGA says the re-release of Sonic CD will include the original Japanese soundtrack. For those of you wondering what that means... well, it means this.
