Txtr Beagle takes a trip to the FCC, gets splayed for our amusement
Ever wanted to see inside an e-reader? Txtr's Beagle ultra-budget unit was deposited at the FCC's subterranean facility to see if its Bluetooth radio would fry your mind like only Thomas Pynchon can. The hardware was dissected and photographed for posterity, which we've added here to sate your curiosity. Now that the Beagle has been marked as safe enough to finish that copy of Times' Arrow we never got around to, we might see it wind up for sale in the US -- assuming Txtr can convince prospective partners AT&T and Sprint of the benefits of encouraging its customers to read.

Which T-Mobile smartphones will support LTE?
It's no secret that T-Mobile is on the cusp of lighting up its first LTE network in Las Vegas, but with Kansas City soon to follow -- and ambitions of extending LTE coverage to 100 million Americans by mid-year -- it's time to start factoring this consideration into your next smartphone purchase. While the carrier's HSPA+ 42 network is certainly speedy, there's no point in saddling yourself with a device that's rooted in the past. Want to make sure you're ready for what comes next? Read on for everything you need to know.

Android and BlackBerry 10: How they stack up
It’s BlackBerry 10 day today, and you knew we had to take a few minutes to see just what BlackBerry has to offer. Right off the bat, we’re going to say it’s good enough to keep folks still using the BlackBerry platform happy that they hung around, and probably even tempt a few people to give BlackBerry a try for the first time. Kevin has a good look at the hardware and some of the UI and features in the video. Give it a watch, then join us after the break we can see how it all matches up to Android.

Strategy Analytics: Android claimed 70 percent of world smartphone share in Q4 2012
Maybe it's easier being green than we thought. We suspected Android would do well in smartphone market share when Strategy Analytics had Samsung surging ahead in the fourth quarter of 2012, but the firm's newer breakdown of estimated share by OS shows an even larger jump for Google's overall platform -- from 51.3 percent in fall 2011 to 70.1 percent one year later. Apple was knocked down slightly to 22 percent, although it's mostly other platforms that took the bruising. Collectively, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Phone and other platforms sank from 25.1 percent of the smartphone space in late 2011 to just 7.9 points as 2012 drew to a close. When just two companies' platforms make up 92 percent of smartphones, it's safe to call the result a duopoly, like Strategy Analytics does -- even if others aren't so content with the idea.
Strategy Analytics: Android and Apple iOS Capture a Record 92 Percent Share of Global Smartphone Shipments in Q4 2012
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually to reach 217 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012. Android and Apple iOS together accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide.
Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, "Global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually from 157.0 million units in Q4 2011 to 217.0 million in Q4 2012. Global smartphone shipments for the full year reached a record 700.1 million units in 2012, increasing robustly from 490.5 million units in 2011. Global shipment growth slowed from 64 percent in 2011 to 43 percent in 2012 as penetration of smartphones began to mature in developed regions such as North America and Western Europe."
Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, "We estimate 152.1 million Android smartphones were shipped globally in Q4 2012, nearly doubling from 80.6 million units in Q4 2011. Android's share of the global smartphone market has surged from 51 percent to 70 percent over the past year, crushing Symbian, Bada and other platforms in its wake. Almost half-a-billion Android smartphones were shipped in total worldwide during 2012. Android is clearly the undisputed volume leader of the smartphone industry at the present time. Android's challenge for 2013 will be to defend its leadership, not only against Apple, but also against an emerging wave of hungry challengers that includes Microsoft, Blackberry, Firefox and Tizen."
Scott Bicheno, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, added, "Apple grew 29 percent annually and shipped 47.8 million smartphones worldwide for 22 percent marketshare in Q4 2012, dipping slightly from 24 percent a year earlier. Combined together, Apple and Android accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally in the fourth quarter of 2012. The worldwide smartphone industry has effectively become a duopoly as consumer demand has polarized around mass-market Android models and premium Apple designs."

FCC filing reveals Apple TV model A1469 with slightly smaller dimensions (update: new antenna, CPU too?)
We don't generally find surprises from Apple in the daily stream of FCC documents and test reports, but a new filing published today seems to suggest that a new Apple TV model of some sort could be on the way. While the diagram pictured above doesn't suggest any major changes to the device's appearance, it does list some slightly smaller measurements: 93.78mm square compared to the 98mm of the current model. That's certainly not the biggest of differences, but the measurements in previous Apple FCC filings have been spot on. The model number, A1469, is also one that we haven't seen before, but the documents unfortunately don't offer much else in the way of details (only confirmation of the same WiFi capabilities as the current-gen Apple TV).
As MacRumors noted yesterday, a look at the download options for the latest Apple TV software update also revealed a new "AppleTV3,2" model, which it speculated could be an international version of the device -- although it of course remains to be seen if it and this model are one and the same. For now, you can get a closer look at the filing yourself at the source link.
Update: Anandtech has peeked through the filings and the source code, finding a new single antenna setup that follows the design of other iDevices, and reference to an updated A5X SoC at its heart.

Google Giving helps bring 15,000 Raspberry Pi units to UK school children
It's not every day your class gets a visit from a tech bigwig like Eric Schmidt. Google's executive chairman paid a visit to a UK school, alongside Raspberry Pi co-founder Eben Upton. The duo were there to talk code, an appearance that coincided with the announcement that a grant from Google Giving will be bringing 15,000 Raspberry Pi Model Bs to kids in that country. The companies will be working alongside six educational partners to decide precisely whose hands those little computers will end up in. More info on the program can be found in the source link.

Zombie Road Trip might make you love zombie games again
Ready for yet another zombie themed game for your phone or tablet? Yeah, I'm getting a little burnt on the whole zombie kitsch myself, too. But this one's actually a good zombie themed game, and one you'll want to try.
Zombie Road Trip has a simple, yet familiar premise -- stay away from zombies that will eat you, and kill the ones that get in your path. Sounds familiar, right? Now imagine instead of running away, you're driving a dump truck that can do mid-air stunts and flips -- with a machine gun mounted on the hood. Now we're talking. Add in the upgradeable equipment, and easy controls and you have what I call a winner. Play it for ten minutes, and I think you'll agree.
Zombie Road Trip is an endless style game, where the gameplay only stops if you get eaten by the zombie horde that's trailing you. While you race for your life, you'll be faced with zombies in all shapes and sizes coming at you, just waiting for you to tap the screen and fire your weapon. You can mow them down (what good is a dump truck if you can't turn the bad guys into a bloody smear with it?), but this also slows you down. Slow players and fast zombie hordes make for a short game. While you're driving through the various terrain, you can flip and do stunts each time you get airborne. Each stunt you successfully pull off, or zombie you kill gives you coins which you can use to buy stuff to better kill zombies with. If you're impatient, you can also buy the coins via an in-app purchase.
The controls, as mentioned, are easy -- tap the bottom right to tilt clockwise, and the bottom left tilts you counter clockwise. Tapping anywhere on the screen fires your weapon. Controls that are easy to learn and master are a must for touch screen gaming and Zombie Road Trip does a great job here. This is a fun little game that you'll be able to play during those times when you only have a few minutes to kill, as well as when it's play time and you're up for a serious gaming session. It's free, runs on Gingerbread and higher, and you can grab it at the link above. Hit the break for some screenshots and the trailer video.
